چکیده

Adult Boltenia villosa (phylum, Chordata; subphylum, Urochorda [Tunicata]; class, Ascidiacea) were collected intertidally. Gametes and embryos were handled according to standard procedures (Fernald, 1959; Costello et al., 1957). Living embryos in gastrula or neurula stages were pipetted into the fixative accompanied by a small amount of seawater. The fixative was either (a) 2.7% Os04 in approximately 0.2 M bicarbonate buffer, or (b) 2% Os04 in 0.1 M phosphate buffer. After fixation for 2 hr at 0-4 C, the specimens were rapidly dehydrated in a graded ethanol series, left for 30 min in absolute ethanol, and embedded in Epon (Luft, 1961). Thin sections were stained with lead tartrate (Millonig, 1961) and examined in an RCA 2A electron microscope.

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF ORAL CELLS IN VITRO I. Annulate Lamellae Observed in Strain KB Cells

The term "annulate lamellae" was first used by Swift (22) to describe pairs of cytoplasmic membranes arranged in parallel stacks and containing periodically spaced annuli. Generally, annulate lamellae have been observed in the cytoplasm of lower organisms (7-9, 11, 14, 22). However, they also have been found in the cytoplasm of the adrenal cortex of fetal rats (19), the liver and pancreatic aci...

Increased Numbers of Annulate Lamellae in Myocardium of Chick Embryos Incubated at Abnormal Temperatures

Annulate lamellae have been observed in the myocardium of 18-day-old chick embryos maintained at the normal temperature of 100 degrees F and at 90 degrees F during the last week of incubation. An increased number of annulate lamellae was observed in heart muscle of embryos incubated at 90 degrees F. This is probably caused by a persistent production of these organelles, since annulate lamellae ...

Attachment of Intranuclear Annulate Lamellae to the Nuclear Envelope

Oocytes of four species of ascidians were examined with the electron microscope. Prior to fixation, oocytes were subjected to centrifugal forces of 10-15,000 g for 5-10 min and were compared with uncentrifuged oocytes. Intranuclear annulate lamellae (IAL) are distributed uniformly around the periphery of the nucleus of the uncentrifuged oocyte. Centrifugation produces a marked flattening of the...

Intranuclear and Cytoplasmic Annulate Lamellae in Tunicate Oocytes

Electron microscope studies were made on various tunicate oocytes at different stages of growth and development. Both the inner and outer lamellae of the perforated nuclear envelope demonstrate considerable blebbing activity. The blebs of the inner lamella detach into the nucleoplasm where they undergo a special type of fusion process resulting in the formation of numerous, usually single, diff...

The Origin and Fate of Annulate Lamellae in Maturing Sand Dollar Eggs

Electron micrograph evidence is presented that the nuclear envelope of the mature ovum of Dendraster excentricus is implicated in a proliferation of what appear as nuclear envelope replicas in the cytoplasm. The proliferation is associated with intranuclear vesicles which apparently coalesce to form comparatively simple replicas of the nuclear envelope closely applied to the inside of the nucle...
